Jobs in this family manage, supervise, and actively participate in various activities involving interpretation, preservation, protection, maintenance, and enhancement of state parks and historic sites. 

Typical functions

The functions within this job family will vary by level, but may include the following:

  • Conduct state park or historic site tours.
  • Operate visitor services facilities.
  • Provide information to visitors regarding services and attractions.
  • Collect relevant statistical and survey data.

The work assigned to positions in this series ranges from conducting state park or historic site tours to managing a park, program, and/or historic site.

Park/Historic Site Technician

This is a technical position accountable for conducting state park or historic site tours, and presenting interpretive and educational programs at state parks, historic sites, schools, or other community locations. Additionally, employees will be responsible for operating visitor services facilities to include taking reservations, selling souvenirs, operating cash registers, tracking inventory, collecting statistical and survey data, scheduling tours, and leading visitor group activities.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

Knowledge of the State of Missouri’s natural and cultural history. Knowledge of merchandising techniques, store display, and selling methods. Ability to prepare and present relevant information and develop related exhibits. Ability to operate a motor vehicle and maintain a valid vehicle operator’s license.

Typical qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent and 1 or more years of relevant experience. (Substitutions may be allowed.)

Park/Historic Site Specialist

This is a first-level professional position accountable for performing basic management duties relating to the overall operation and maintenance of a state park or historic site facility which includes visitor services, budgeting and procurement for minor projects, preservation, research, interpretation, and other management tasks. An employee may be accountable for participating in planning and directing natural or cultural history interpretation, resource management, and research in an assigned state park or historic site. Additional duties may include assisting with planning, coordinating, and implementing programs related to state parks or historic sites; and assisting with developing and administering long-range plans, short-term projects, and special events.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous level: Knowledge of business management, budget preparation, and procurement. Knowledge of natural and cultural resource preservation methods and techniques. Skill in providing information and guidance to park/historic site visitors and staff. Ability to develop and administer short and long term plans.

Senior Park/Historic Site Specialist

This is a second-level professional position accountable for planning, coordinating, and implementing programs related to state parks or historic sites, or planning and directing natural or cultural history interpretation, resource management, and research in an assigned state park or historic site. May also assist in planning and directing the overall operation and maintenance of a state park or historic site facility offering a variety of services which may include campgrounds, lodging, marinas, stores, trails, special ecological management areas, historic structures, or non-structural cultural remnants.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous levels: Knowledge of the administration of a state park or historic site. Ability to oversee a variety of services. Ability to develop budget and project recommendations. Ability to mentor and coach staff.

Park/Historic Site Coordinator

This is a seasoned professional position accountable for administering programs related to state parks or historic sites or planning and directing natural or cultural history interpretation, resource management, stewardship, and research in an assigned area. May be accountable for planning and directing the overall operation and maintenance or stewardship of one or more state parks or historic site facilities offering a variety of services which may include campgrounds, lodging, marinas, stores, trails, designated ecological management areas, historic structures, or non-structural cultural remnants. Additionally, employee will be responsible for functioning as a lead worker and may supervise lower-level positions.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous levels: Knowledge of safety measures and practices relating to park/historic sites. Skill in budget preparation, project planning, and administering park/historic site programs. Ability to provide direction to staff.

Park/Historic Site Supervisor

This is a supervisory position accountable for managing a small state park or assisting in the administration of the assigned natural and/or cultural resource program or service; assists in directing the development and implementation of departmental planning issues. May also coordinate the development and review of specialized plans for multiple state parks or historic site interpretation, statewide resource management programs, and/or scientific research. Employee supervision includes hire recommendations, training, planning and assigning work, performance assessment, coaching, and progressive discipline. Supervision at this level also requires these employees to have the knowledge and skills to perform and review the work overseen.

In addition to those identified in the previous levels: Knowledge of strategic planning principles and theories. Skill in providing leadership to staff. Ability to establish and implement effective programs and procedures. Ability to analyze programs to ensure compliance with relevant regulations. Ability to manage difficult and stressful situations.

Park/Historic Site Manager

This is a managerial position accountable for managing a large state park, multiple small parks, or a large program. At this level, an employee will be responsible for supervising permanent, seasonal, temporary, and volunteer employees in the protection, maintenance, operation, and repair of state parks, natural and cultural resources, facilities, equipment, and systems. Work involves directing or assisting in the general management of policy development, program planning and coordination, and the evaluation of policy or organizational changes and new programs. Employee supervision includes hire recommendations, training, planning and assigning work, performance assessment, coaching, and progressive discipline. Supervision at this level also requires these employees to have the knowledge and skills to perform and review the work overseen.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous levels: Skill in reviewing, analyzing, interpreting, and/or preparing federal or state laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures related to assigned program. Skill in managing and collaborating with staff.
