Description

Jobs in this family represent various levels of correctional officers who perform security-related tasks to ensure a safe environment within an adult correctional institution or satellite facility. The jobs in this family perform duties associated with correctional officers and may involve the use of weapons or other physical immobilizing devices.

Typical functions

The functions within this job family will vary by level, but may include the following:

  • Control, direct, and monitor the activities and movement of offenders.
  • Perform security searches and inspections.
  • Maintain security of an assigned area or post.
  • Conduct physical count of offenders.
  • Operate manually or electronically controlled security equipment.

 The work assigned to positions in this series ranges from performing security related tasks to supervision of security operations.

Correctional Officer

First-level correctional officer accountable for controlling, directing, and monitoring the activities and movements of offenders within a specified area or while escorting offenders off institution or facility grounds. An employee performs various security activities and searches at internal control points; performs physical counts of offenders, including reconciling and reporting discrepancies; writes daily operational reports; and performs random and specific searches and security inspections of offenders and various areas within the institution.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

Knowledge of the rules and regulations concerning the control and treatment of adult offenders in a correctional facility. Ability to use physical force and weapons or other physical immobilizing devices. Ability to operate surveillance and communication equipment. Ability to write reports. Ability to observe, learn, and understand inmate behavior.

Correctional Sergeant

Second-level position that controls, directs, and monitors activities and movements of offenders. An employee performs various security activities and searches at internal control points; performs physical counts of offenders, including reconciling and reporting discrepancies; and performs random and specific searches and security inspections of offenders and various areas of the institution.  Employees exercise some independence in judgment while operating within standard work patterns, practices, and policies. At this level, employees are assigned lead work responsibilities in the maintenance of security in an institution or facility during assigned shift within the area of responsibility (e.g., makes assignments and coordinates lower level officer activities; trains officers to perform assigned work; monitoring duties performed to ensure completion and performance according to policies and procedures.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous level: Knowledge of the rules and regulations of the institutional facility operation. Skill in the operation of electronic surveillance and communications equipment. Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports. Ability to evaluate situations and take appropriate courses of action.

Typical qualifications

6 months-1 year of relevant experience.

Correctional Lieutenant

First-level supervisory position that controls, directs, and monitors activities and movement of offenders. Positions at this level are regularly assigned to the most critical posts and/or shifts. An employee performs various security activities and searches at external control points; reviews physical counts and reconciling issues; and in the absence of higher level authority, provides immediate direction during emergencies.  May serve as Officer-In-Charge in absence of superior. At this level, employees are assigned lead work/administrative responsibilities in the maintenance of security in an institution or facility.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous levels: Skill in the use of weapons, physical immobilizing devices, and emergency equipment. Ability to exercise sound judgment and act quickly in an emergency situation. Ability to supervise and train staff in the performance of their duties.

Typical qualifications

3 or more years of corrections experience.

Correctional Captain

Second-level supervisory position who can serve as the Officer-In-Charge located in a correctional institution or satellite facility either supervising security operations of an entire shift or a specific security program. In either capacity, employees at this level supervise subordinate security staff who monitor, control, and direct offenders. Supervision is more administrative in nature rather than direct day-to-day oversight of security activities, requiring a higher level of delegated authority (e.g., authorizes changes to institutional routine; reviews and endorses reports prepared by staff; authorizes overtime).

In addition to those identified in the previous levels: Knowledge of the rules and regulations relating to the operation and security of a correctional facility. Ability to exercise sound judgment in dealing with offenders and staff.

Typical qualifications

4 or more years of corrections experience.
