Correctional Officer

General summary

First-level correctional officer accountable for controlling, directing, and monitoring the activities and movements of offenders within a specified area or while escorting offenders off institution or facility grounds. An employee performs various security activities and searches at internal control points; performs physical counts of offenders, including reconciling and reporting discrepancies; writes daily operational reports; and performs random and specific searches and security inspections of offenders and various areas within the institution.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

Knowledge of the rules and regulations concerning the control and treatment of adult offenders in a correctional facility. Ability to use physical force and weapons or other physical immobilizing devices. Ability to operate surveillance and communication equipment. Ability to write reports. Ability to observe, learn, and understand inmate behavior.
