Laboratory Support Supervisor

General summary

Supervisory position accountable for overseeing and directing the work of lower-level laboratory positions. Mentors lower-level positions in laboratory procedures including sample preparation, accessioning, and disposal. May coordinate the maintenance of critical laboratory equipment (i.e. centrifuges, microscopes, air handling systems). Employee supervision includes hire recommendations, training, planning and assigning work, performance assessment, coaching, and progressive discipline. Supervision at this level also requires the employees to have the knowledge and skills to perform and review the work overseen.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous levels: Knowledge of laboratory terminology, procedures, equipment, computer information systems, and software. Knowledge of the proper procedures for safe collection, handling, sterilization and neutralization, and disposal of chemicals, infectious materials, hazardous biological wastes, contaminated glassware, and laboratory equipment. Ability to provide supervision and oversee the work of staff.

Typical qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent and 3 or more years of relevant experience. (Substitutions may be allowed.)
