General summary

This is a professional archaeologist position accountable for planning and conducting archaeological surveys to identify, record, and preserve sites. Employees will be responsible for reviewing cultural resource clearance requests, assuring compliance with state and federal preservation laws, directing archaeological excavations, and conducting related educational and outreach functions. Additional duties include mentoring lower-level positions, including volunteers, temporary employees, and paraprofessionals; participating in archaeological surveys or excavations; and curating artifacts. 

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous levels: Knowledge of the state’s soils and physical attributes. Skill in conducting research. Ability to use archaeological tools to uncover artifacts and preserve sites.

Typical qualifications

Master’s degree and 1 year of relevant experience. (Substitutions may be allowed.)
