Description

Jobs in this family work to identify, evaluate, document, and preserve historically significant buildings, structures, and resources through artifact curation, research, archaeological/architectural surveys, excavations, and records management. 

Typical functions

The functions within this job family will vary by level, but may include the following:

  • Plan and/or conduct archaeological/architectural surveys to identify, record, and preserve sites.
  • Collect, research, label, and photograph specimens and artifacts to be used in interpretive exhibits and publications.
  • Maintain, coordinate, and document historic and archeological artifacts.
  • Ensure compliance with preservation laws.

The work assigned to positions in this series ranges from conducting archaeological/architectural surveys to supervising and planning archaeological/architectural surveys. 

Cultural Resource Specialist

This is a professional position conducting research and surveys to identify, record, evaluate, and preserve archeological/architectural cultural resources. Work involves inventorying, documenting, and maintaining databases of collections. Additional duties include preparing historical and cultural items for storage, shipping, or display as well as ensuring compliance with state and federal preservation laws. Work also may involve assisting with or conducting educational and outreach functions, archaeological excavations, and architectural investigations.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

Knowledge of the state’s historical architecture and/or archaeological heritage. Knowledge of historic preservation principles and practices. Knowledge of the state and federal preservation laws. Knowledge of research sources and methodologies. Knowledge of storage and preservation techniques and methods. Ability to operate a motor vehicle, travel, and maintain a valid vehicle operator’s license.

Typical qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and 0-2 years of relevant experience. (Substitutions may be allowed.)

Cultural Resource Supervisor

This is a supervisory position accountable for planning and conducting archaeological/architectural surveys to identify, record, evaluate, and preserve sites and/or resources. Work involves overseeing or reviewing cultural resource clearance requests, assuring compliance with state and federal preservation laws, and conducting related educational and outreach functions. Additional duties include directing archaeological excavations as well as advising, assisting with, and/or conducting architectural investigations. Employees at this level will supervise professional, paraprofessional, temporary, and volunteer positions.  Employee supervision includes hiring recommendations, training, planning and assigning work, performance assessment, coaching, and progressive discipline. Supervision at this level also requires these employees to have the knowledge and skills to perform and review the work overseen.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous level: Ability to preserve and store cultural resources. Ability to interpret and apply state and federal preservation laws. Ability to provide leadership, supervision, and training to staff and volunteers.

Bachelor’s degree and 2 or more years of relevant experience. (Substitutions may be allowed.)

Architectural Historian

This is a professional architectural historian position accountable for planning and conducting architectural surveys to identify, record, and preserve architectural sites.  Employees will be responsible for reviewing cultural resource clearance requests, assuring compliance with state and federal preservation laws, directing architectural surveys, and conducting related educational and outreach functions. Additional duties include overseeing and mentoring lower-level positions, including volunteers, temporary employees, and paraprofessionals, participating in architectural surveys or excavations, and curating artifacts.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous levels: Skill in the preservation of architectural sites. Ability to conduct research and plan preservation activities. Ability to create clear and thorough historic assessments and other technical writings.

Archaeologist

This is a professional archaeologist position accountable for planning and conducting archaeological surveys to identify, record, and preserve sites. Employees will be responsible for reviewing cultural resource clearance requests, assuring compliance with state and federal preservation laws, directing archaeological excavations, and conducting related educational and outreach functions. Additional duties include mentoring lower-level positions, including volunteers, temporary employees, and paraprofessionals; participating in archaeological surveys or excavations; and curating artifacts. 

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous levels: Knowledge of the state’s soils and physical attributes. Skill in conducting research. Ability to use archaeological tools to uncover artifacts and preserve sites.
