Geographic Information Systems Supervisor

General summary

Positions at this level are responsible for supervising GIS professionals, specialists, and technicians. Positions are accountable for GIS projects, technology integration, and application development and maintenance. Uses spatial data to improve agency’s operation and services. Oversees development, enhancement, and maintenance of GIS applications. Recommends creation and modification of standards and procedures. Directs GIS projects including creating project plans, identifying resources, and developing timelines.  First-line supervisor recommends hiring and disciplinary action, evaluates performance, provides training and coaching of new employees, and assigns work.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous levels: Skill in project management. Skill in supervising multiple tasks. Ability to mentor, coach, and professionally develop staff.

Typical qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and 6-10 years of experience in GIS. (Substitutions may be allowed.)
