Geographic Information Systems Specialist

General summary

This is a professional level position responsible for supporting an individual agency or an agency division. Plans, designs, develops, and implements applications to ensure data integrity, compatibility with existing systems, and compliance with standards, policies, and other guidelines. Provides technical support and guidance to GIS users and staff regarding GIS applications, data acquisitions and creations, data editing, GIS desktop software issues, and design, implementation, and management of geodatabases. Assists with assigned projects.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous level: Knowledge of GIS, data collection, and cloud technology concepts. Knowledge of GIS products and analytical tools.  Knowledge of types and relationships of spatial and non-spatial data. Knowledge of project management.

Typical qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and 2 to 5 years of experience in GIS. (Substitutions may be allowed.)
