Jobs in this family complete technical work in one or more of the following areas: field surveying; materials field and laboratory inspection or testing; construction inspection; and office engineering and/or drafting.

Typical functions

The functions within this job family will vary by level, but may include the following:

  • Support professionals in an engineering, water resources, surveying, drafting, or other related discipline.
  • Perform tasks using computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) or other relevant software.
  • Operate field equipment associated with assigned discipline.
  • Perform mathematical computations of varying complexity.

Positions allocated to this series may perform the duties described, or specialize in supporting one of numerous disciplines. The work assigned to positions in this series ranges from basic to complex tasks such as gathering/entering data to supervising a team supporting various disciplines.

Engineering, Surveying, and Field Aide

A position in this vocational area typically performs work in one of various disciplines such as engineering, water resources, surveying, and/or drafting. A position at this level is responsible for tasks such as basic data gathering in various technical fields, entering the data into existing databases, using CADD software, and operating tools and equipment. Work also includes conducting inspections, verifying field measurements, and performing basic testing. Performs maintenance at field stations, prepares and maintain field equipment, and interacts with customers.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

Skill in performing mathematical calculations. Ability to perform manual work requiring lifting, reaching, and bending. Ability to work in the field in a variety of weather patterns. Ability to understand and interpret data. Ability to operate field equipment. Ability to travel, operate a motor vehicle, and maintain a valid vehicle operator’s license.

Typical qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent and 0-2 years of relevant experience.

Engineering, Surveying, and Field Technician

A position at this level performs work of moderate level complexity in various technical fields and supports various disciplines such as engineering, water resources, surveying, and/or drafting. Duties include gathering and interpreting data, preparing and interpreting plans, and providing data to prepare reports used by professional and managerial employees. Prepares maps and moderately complex CADD productions. Reviews permits for compliance, enters data into existing databases, and interacts with customers.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous level: Skill in using CADD software. Ability to plot, draw, and use maps. Ability to prepare statistical and technical spreadsheets and reports.

High School diploma or equivalent and 2-6 years of relevant experience. (Substitutions may be allowed.)

Senior Engineering, Surveying, and Field Technician

This is journey level technical work with a primary focus on the performance of work at a moderate level of complexity supporting professionals in various disciplines such as engineering, water resources, surveying, and/or drafting. Analyzes and interprets data, prepares and interprets plans, and participates in the preparation of reports used by professional and managerial employees. Prepares complex maps and complex CADD productions. Reviews permits for compliance, maintains databases, and interacts with customers. A position at this level may review/audit other staff’s work as well as provide guidance and direction.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous levels: Ability to analyze data and provide guidance/direction to staff.

Engineering, Surveying, and Field Technician Supervisor

This is supervisory work responsible for providing administrative and technical leadership to a team supporting various disciplines such as engineering, water resources, surveying, and/or drafting. The focus of this position is on supervision, resource management, and accountability for results of the team’s work outcomes. Ensures integration with other teams. An employee in this position serves as a technical resource, plans and directs work, and reviews and reports on progress and outcomes of work. An employee in this position may also perform engineering technician work at an advanced vocational level and acts as a technical resource to the team.

In addition to those identified in the previous levels: Skill in providing technical guidance and direction to staff. Ability to manage staff resources.
