Description

Jobs in this family oversee, coordinate, and work in the laundry facility at hospitals, correctional facilities, or other state facilities. 

Typical functions

The functions within this job family will vary by level, but may include the following:

  • Operate and maintain laundry equipment.
  • Instruct staff on the use of laundry equipment.

The work assigned to positions in this series ranges from basic operation of laundry equipment to the management of a laundry service operation in a state facility. 

Laundry Worker

This is a laundry position accountable for performing semi-skilled laundry activities in a state facility.  An employee at this level may function as the lead worker of one or more phases of a laundry operation. Duties may include operating and maintaining washers, extractors, dryers, tumblers, mangles, presses, irons, and other laundry equipment; and instructing staff or resident workers in their proper operation.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

Knowledge of laundry chemicals, their usage, and reactions in regard to water temperatures and laundering. Ability to work long hours while standing, and under conditions of high temperatures and humidity. Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to laundry equipment.

Typical qualifications

1-2 years of work experience. (Substitutions may be allowed.)

Laundry Supervisor

This is a supervisory position responsible for duties involving the operation of laundry facilities in a state facility.  This position will perform supervisory duties including providing hiring recommendations; training staff; planning, assigning, and reviewing work; and providing performance assessments, coaching, and progressive discipline.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous level: Knowledge and skills to perform and review the work of others. Ability to plan and organize work to meet production schedules. 

Typical qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent and 2 or more years of relevant experience. (Substitutions may be allowed.)

Laundry Manager

This is supervisory and administrative work in planning and directing a laundry operation in a state facility.  Responsible for planning the operation of a large laundry and assigning work to meet production schedules.  Supervisory duties include providing hiring recommendations; training staff; planning, assigning, and reviewing work; and providing performance assessments, coaching, and progressive discipline.  At this level, an employee may supervise residents or offenders performing laundry work.  Additional responsibilities include performing and reviewing the work overseen.  

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous levels: Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports. Ability to develop and modify relevant policy and procedure.

High School diploma or equivalent and 3-4 years of relevant experience. (Substitutions may be allowed.)
