Roles in this family are responsible for oversight and management of a correctional institution or a significant specialty area/unit/program.

Typical functions

The functions within this job family will vary by level, but may include the following:

  • Oversee assigned operations.
  • Select, train, supervise, and evaluate staff.

The work assigned to positions in this series ranges from overseeing all security or classification operations to administrative functions, oversight, and/or quality assurance for a specialty area/unit.

Correctional Administrator (Level 1)

This is a managerial position that may function as the chief of custody or assistant warden overseeing all security or classification operations through the supervision of staff. Incumbent is responsible for the performance of operations, security related decisions, and/or similar activities related to a facility’s programs.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

Knowledge of the rules and regulations relating to the operation and security of a correctional facility. Skill in decision-making and problem solving. Ability to supervise and train staff in the performance of duties.

Typical qualifications

5 or more years of corrections experience and 1-3 years of supervisory experience. (Substitutions may be allowed.)

Correctional Administrator (Level 2)

This is an advanced managerial position that may function as the deputy manager of a specialty area/unit/program, or deputy warden for a facility, overseeing all operations through the supervision of staff. Employees are responsible for the performance of operations, budget oversight, security related decisions, and similar activities related to a facility’s programs. May perform similar administrative functions, oversight, and/or quality assurance for a specialty area/unit.

Specialist positions at this level may function as parole hearing analysts, reviewing case files of individuals confined in the Missouri Department of Corrections and formulating recommendations for release, methods of release, and conditions of supervision and/or revocations.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous level: Knowledge of correctional programs, staffing patterns, and supervisory techniques. Knowledge of general administrative functions. Ability to enforce rules, regulations, and discipline. Ability to exercise sound judgment and respond quickly in an emergency situation.

Correctional Administrator (Level 3)

This is the senior-level managerial position that functions as the manager of a specialty area/unit or warden of a facility, overseeing all operations through the supervision of staff. Employees are responsible for the performance of operations, budget administration, final security related decisions, and similar activities related to a facility’s programs. May perform similar administrative functions, oversight, and/or quality assurance for a specialty area/unit.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous levels: Knowledge of managerial techniques and administrative practices. Skill in providing leadership to staff. Ability to develop, implement, and administer assigned program or services to achieve positive program and offender outcomes.
